Holy ground

Meaning

Holy ground is ground regarded as holy or set apart for God. In Exodus 3:5, the LORD told Moses that the place where he stood was holy ground and commanded him to remove his shoes.

Biblical Usage

In Exodus 3:1-6, Moses came to Horeb, the mountain of God, where the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. When Moses turned aside to see the sight, God called to him from the bush and told him not to come near. He was commanded to remove his shoes because the ground was holy.

A related account appears in Joshua 5:13-15, where Joshua was told to remove his shoe because the place where he stood was holy.
