Meaning
Haran, also known as Harran, is an ancient city of northern Mesopotamia, located in present-day southeastern Turkey near the Syrian border.
The ancient city was an important settlement in northern Mesopotamia and was situated along major routes connecting Mesopotamia with the regions to the west.
Biblical Usage
In Scripture, Haran was a city where Terah settled with Abram, Sarai, and Lot after leaving Ur of the Chaldees.
Terah died there, and Abram departed from Haran at the command of the LORD to go into the land of Canaan.
Haran was also associated with the family of Rebekah and Rachel through their relatives who lived there.
