Meaning
Pharaoh is an ancient Egyptian title meaning “Great House.” It originally referred to the royal palace and later came to be used for the king of Egypt.
Biblical Usage
In Scripture, Pharaoh is the title used for the ruler of Egypt.
In the book of Exodus, Pharaoh is the ruler who refused to let the children of Israel depart from Egypt until the LORD brought judgment upon Egypt through the plagues and the death of the firstborn.
The term is also used for rulers of Egypt in other biblical accounts and does not identify a ruler by his personal name.
