Meaning
Shimei is a Hebrew masculine personal name related to the Hebrew root associated with hearing. It is commonly understood as “he has heard.”
Biblical Usage
Several people in Scripture bear the name Shimei. The Shimei described in 2 Samuel 16 was the son of Gera, a Benjamite associated with the house of Saul. He cursed David and threw stones at him while David fled Jerusalem during Absalom’s rebellion.
When David returned, Shimei asked for forgiveness, and David swore that he would not put him to death at that time. Before his death, David gave Solomon instructions concerning Shimei.
