Meaning
Sure means certain, dependable, reliable, or secure. It describes something that can be trusted and is not doubtful or uncertain.
Biblical Usage
In 2 Samuel 23:5, David describes the everlasting covenant God made with him as “ordered in all things, and sure.” The Hebrew wording conveys the idea of the covenant being ordered and kept secure. David connects this covenant with his salvation and desire.
The word also appears in the KJV description of the LORD’s way and word in 2 Samuel 22:31, where the word of the LORD is described as tried and the LORD as a shield to those who trust in Him.
Original Languages
Hebrew: וּשְׁמֻרָה (u-shemurah) occurs in 2 Samuel 23:5 and is related to שָׁמַר (shamar), meaning to keep, guard, or preserve. The KJV renders this form as “sure” in the description of the everlasting covenant.
Greek: βέβαιος (bebaios) means firm, steadfast, or certain. It is included as a related Greek term, not as the original wording of the Old Testament passage.
