Meaning
A stronghold is a secure or defensible place that is difficult for an enemy to capture. The word can also describe a source of protection or a firmly established position.
Biblical Usage
In Scripture, strongholds include fortified places and locations used for defence or refuge. David stayed in strongholds while Saul sought to capture him (1 Samuel 23:14). Such places could provide protection from an attacking army or pursuer.
The term is also used figuratively. The LORD is described as a stronghold or refuge in times of trouble (Psalm 9:9). In 2 Corinthians 10:4, Paul uses the term figuratively in describing the overthrow of arguments and positions raised against the knowledge of God.
