Meaning

A parable is a short account or illustration used to teach a moral or spiritual truth.

The word comes from Greek parabolē, meaning a comparison or the placing of one thing beside another.

Biblical Usage

Jesus frequently taught the people through parables. He used familiar things from everyday life, such as seeds, fields, servants, vineyards, and households, to explain truths concerning the kingdom of heaven.

His parables also exposed the hearts and attitudes of those who heard Him. Some parables were explained by Jesus to His disciples, while others were spoken to the multitudes.
