Meaning
“I AM THAT I AM” is the expression by which God identifies Himself to Moses in Exodus 3:14. When Moses asked what he should tell the children of Israel if they asked the name of the God who had sent him, God answered, “I AM THAT I AM.” He then instructed Moses to tell them, “I AM hath sent me unto you.”
Biblical Usage
In Exodus 3:13-15, God spoke to Moses from the burning bush and commissioned him to bring the children of Israel out of Egypt. When Moses asked what name he should give the children of Israel, God gave this answer and instructed him to tell them that I AM had sent him. God also identified Himself as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
