Meaning
Ahithophel is a Hebrew masculine personal name. Its precise etymology is uncertain, so a definite English meaning should not be assigned without reliable evidence.
Biblical Usage
Ahithophel was a counsellor of David who joined Absalom when Absalom rebelled against his father. His advice was regarded as highly authoritative.
During the rebellion, Ahithophel advised Absalom on how to pursue David. When Absalom chose Hushai’s counsel instead, Ahithophel returned home, put his affairs in order, and hanged himself.
