Meaning
Unleavened bread is bread made without leaven, the substance used to cause dough to rise. In the KJV, the term is associated particularly with the departure of the children of Israel from Egypt and the Feast of Unleavened Bread.
Biblical Usage
In Exodus 12:14-20, the LORD commanded the children of Israel to observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread for seven days and to remove leaven from their houses. In Exodus 12:33-39, the Israelites departed from Egypt before their dough was leavened, and they baked unleavened cakes from the dough they had brought with them.
The Feast of Unleavened Bread was to be observed as an ordinance throughout Israel’s generations. Instructions concerning its observance also appear in Exodus 13:3-10, Exodus 23:15, and Exodus 34:18.
