Meaning
Gall refers to bile, a bitter fluid produced by the liver and stored in the gall bladder. The word is also used figuratively to describe bitterness, resentment, or impudent behaviour.
Biblical Usage
In Scripture, gall is associated with bitterness and suffering. In Matthew 27:34, Jesus was offered vinegar mingled with gall before His crucifixion, but when He had tasted it, He would not drink.
The book of Psalms also uses gall in describing suffering and affliction. In Acts 8:23, Peter uses the expression “gall of bitterness” when addressing Simon.
Mark 15:23 records a related account in which Jesus was offered wine mingled with myrrh, which He did not receive.
