Scripture

According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man build upon this foundation, gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

1 Corinthians 3:10-15

Truth

Believers must build faithfully upon Jesus Christ, knowing that their work will be tested and its true quality revealed.

Insight

  • Jesus Christ is the only foundation upon which believers can build; no other foundation can replace Him.
  • Having the right foundation does not remove the responsibility to build carefully. Paul warns every person to take heed how he builds upon Christ.
  • The different building materials illustrate work of differing quality, and the fire reveals what kind of work has been done.
  • Work that endures receives a reward, while work that is burned results in loss. Paul distinguishes the loss of a person's work from the person's own salvation in this passage.

Application

  • Examine whether your life and service are built upon Jesus Christ and His Word.
  • Consider the quality and motives of the work you do for the Lord.
  • Do not measure the value of your service by outward appearance or immediate success alone.
  • Serve God faithfully and allow Scripture to correct the way you live and work.
