Scripture

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

John 16:13

Truth

Believers must continue to grow in the truth, depending on the Holy Spirit's guidance and remaining grounded in God's Word.

Insight

  • Jesus calls the Holy Spirit the Spirit of truth and says that He will guide His disciples into all truth.
  • Having begun the Christian life does not mean that a person already understands every truth of Scripture.
  • Growth in understanding requires a willingness to learn, receive correction, and move beyond former ways of thinking.
  • The Holy Spirit's guidance does not make careful attention to Scripture unnecessary; believers are responsible to examine what they hear.
  • As believers grow in truth, they become better equipped to recognize teaching that does not agree with God's Word.
  • Spiritual maturity involves more than gaining information; understanding the truth should shape how a believer thinks and lives.

Application

  • Ask God to help you understand His Word and recognize the truth.
  • Read Scripture carefully rather than relying only on what others tell you it means.
  • Remain teachable and accept correction when your understanding needs to change.
  • Test what you hear against the teaching of Scripture.
  • Do not assume that spiritual maturity means you have nothing more to learn.
  • Put the truth you understand into practice as you continue to grow in Christ.
