Scripture

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Galatians 5:19-21

Truth

Believers must recognize and reject the works of the flesh so that they may walk according to the Spirit.

Insight

  • Scripture identifies the works of the flesh and calls believers to recognize them rather than excuse them.
  • Hatred, jealousy, wrath, strife, envy, and other sinful attitudes are serious matters before God.
  • Sinful behavior cannot be overcome by merely addressing outward circumstances; the heart must be changed.
  • Walking in the Spirit requires turning away from the works of the flesh.
  • God's Word exposes sinful attitudes so believers can repent and walk in a different way.

Application

  • Examine your attitudes and conduct against the standard of God's Word.
  • Repent when the works of the flesh are revealed in your life.
  • Choose to walk according to the Spirit rather than giving place to sinful desires.
  • Replace hatred, envy, strife, and wrath with the character produced by the Spirit.
